Cancer Support Community
Lafayette, California
Cancer Support Community is a non-profit providing support, services, and education for people affected by cancer. The organization serves people with all types of cancer, from those newly diagnosed to long-term survivors as well as providing support for family members and other caregivers. They also help those who want to learn about prevention and intervention. Services are at no cost.
The project is on a six-acre hillside site along one of the gateway roads leading to the town. Oak woodland characterizes the site with steep grades and ridgeline setback, eliminating the eastern half of the site from development.
The center is a unique program -- part educational facility, part community center, part counseling, and part administration -- all housed in a green building integrated into the landscape. The design, nestled into the ground, among the oaks, tucks the parking under the building, minimizing visual impact from the public street and maximizing the sense of retreat for the members of the community.
