Located in a residential neighborhood of predominantly single and two-family homes in Oakland, California, this Montessori school is a one-room class, neighboring at the street edge and open to the landscape and light towards the yard. It was designed as part of a larger site with an existing house used as part of the school. The site connects the streets through the block.

To enter the building, children, parents, and teachers pass through a gate and into a covered, outdoor entry lobby with lockers. From here, children and teachers can enter into the classroom or continue out to the backyard, play spaces. This entry helps the school to maintain a residential scale as seen from the street while creating a comfortable space for parents and students to collect.
