Pacific Heights Residence
San Francisco, California
Situated in a 1910 building that is considered a historic resource by the City of San Francisco, the building is renovated to connect domestic spaces with the street and to the rear yard. Dividing walls were removed and new materials introduced to reinforce relationships between inside and out, and between interior activities. The dividing walls become frames for open views, and the walls themselves become spaces of activities.
Sliding partitions and pocketed doors transform spaces from open to close, allowing a tempering of uses. Edges, walls, and transitions all become places to be at and inhabited — materials and built-ins designed to provide an integrated whole.
